SAMPLE QUESTIONS Std. X

2.  Gardiner says, "We can be neither complete anarchists nor complete socialists in this complex world."Do you agree? Give reasons.
In the passage 'On the Rule of the Road', A.G. Gardiner discusses the need of giving more importance to social liberty in our life . Individual liberty has to be curtailed to a great extend to enable all of us to enjoy social liberty.
Gardiner says, " We can be neither complete anarchists nor complete socialists in this complex world. I agree with his view. If we become complete anarchists and oppose the government and its rules the society cannot function at all. Every body will be getting in everybody else's way and nobody will get anywhere.
For example the stout lady in the passage walks through the middle of the road and creates chaos.  Similarly the man who talked in a loud and pompous voice in the train proved to be a complete anarchist. He became a nuisance for the passengers.
Complete socialists strictly obey the rules of the society and government. We may not be able to obey all the rules laid down by the government.  All the rules may not be acceptable and good for the society. We must have the freedom to question the government . In such situations we must use our individual liberty.
For example if the government makes changes in the school curriculum without considering the rights and feelings of all sections of the society and without proper professional advice, we must express our individual liberty to question the government and establish a school curriculum which is acceptable to all for the good of the students and the society.
Thus we cannot be complete socialists or complete anarchists. We have to be a judicious mixture of both.
