JOKES

While visiting a veterans' hospital with my son, I overheard a retired army sergeant asking people which branch of the military they'd served in. Some said Army, a few Navy, othes Air Force. "What were you in?" She asked a man who'd just entered the room.
Confused,  he mumbled, " The bathroom."

An  Annual Survey among my fellow junior officers indicated that lack of communication from our superiors was a big problem. The commanding officer, however, refusd to believe the results.
"If communication is realy so bad," he demanded of his department heads, "why am I only hearing about it now?"

STD X SAMPLE QUESTIONS SOLVED

 3.   Imagine that you are Swami's granny and narrate how Swami became a hero overnight.

I have a grandson named Swami.  I like him very much. He sleeps beside me. He is afraid of darkness.

One night his father was reading the newspaper. He came upon a news report of a village lad who fought with a tiger. Soon he told Swami that courage is more important than strength and age. He also told Swami to sleep alone in the office -room to prove his courage

However, he slept beside me. But his  father forced him to sleep alone in the office-room. He was very afraid. He asked permission to leave the door open

He slept under the bench because he felt it to be a safer place. He had many fearful thoughts. He had nightmares too. He dreamed that a tiger was chasing him. He felt that the devil would carry him away. He felt something moving. So he attacked it. He bit his leg. That person yelled in pain. He fell on the furniture. There was a great noise. My son, the cook the servant--everyone came running.

Swami had caught a notorious house-breaker. We called the police. They congratulated him. At school also his classmates praised him. Thus Swami became  a hero overnight.

                                    ...........................

4.  "Cowards die many times before they actually die." Examine this statement in the light of the lesson 'The Hero '

In this passage we find that Swami became a hero by chance. He was a coward. He was afraid of darkness  and did not have the courage to sleep alone at night.

Swami usually slept with his grandmother. But one day Swami's father told him to sleep alone in his office room. He said that courage is everything ,strength and age are not important. But Swami disputed with this theory.

Swami tried his best to escape from sleeping alone. Finally, he had to sleep alone. Every moment of the night he was facing death. He had many nightmares He dreamed that a tiger was chasing him. He thought that the devil would carry him away. Thus Swami behaved like a typical coward. He was so afraid that he felt that he would die that night. Thus it is true that cowards die many times before they actually die.

AN ANECDOTE OF MY WEEKEND BUS JOURNEY

This weekend bus journey was from Palliport to Angamaly Via Cherai- N.Parur.A question arose in my humble mind - Are all private buses [Red-killers and similar buses] alike?!!!
I had an appointment at 1210 hrs, for my son at the famous eye-hospital in Angamaly. Kudos to this hospital  for improving the vision of his right eye, Which was affected with Keratoconus.. He had a minor operation in last August and this was a follow-up visit.
We were already late to leave the house because the coconut-climber appeared before me when I popped into the verandah to take my slippers. I was on the look-out for him for quite some time and wished to inform him about it through the media. It was such a great surprise  you know! They are in such great demand these days that one has to go and pick  him up in his posh car to put the coconuts ( and don't ever forget to drop him back home.) This is one of the reasons why I wish to live in a flat during my old age. At least I won't have to put up a look-out notice for coconut-climbers or peep out of the window every half-a-second to see if this very important person is passing by. My coconut-climber is very tricky. We  have only about 5 coconut trees and 5 palm trees in our compound. Whenever, I see him appear on the road,I have to call him in because he would  not climb more than two trees on a single visit and I would have to pay him a handsome amount on every visit. Each time he would say there are bees high up there that sting him. So as soon as I spotted him I clapped my hands and beckoned him. He came and to my surprise agreed to climb a coconut  tree and a palm tree with full of arecanuts.  Fortunately,he was only on his way to the toddy shop and had not consumed it, for the palm trunk was too thin and dancing in the wind - if he fell from it......I can't imagine what would happen.....However, I gained confidence because he was in his senses, although in his sixties-moreover arecanuts have a good market value these days. All these factors prompted me to call him , although it was about to be 9 O' clock. and we were supposed to leave by ten.
Another mystery had also happened last week--All of a sudden one of the taps in my bathroom found a better place in my hand rather than on the bathroom wall. I jumped away to escape from the attack of the rushing water. Here also I showed some courage to fight back and had put  the tap in its place , although in a very insecure way. My husband is a good mechanic, although he is an executive in a finance company. He says he loves to repair taps - but like most husbands, did not find time for it, for the last one week. A lot of water was leaking along the wall from the pipe and every time I touched it, it seemed to say,"I'll drench you"! My patience had crossed all limits . I had called a plumber and told him to make his appearance before 9.30 a.m. He had agreed. But he reached only by ten. He frowned at the tap for being worn out and thus his prescription ran- "change the tap". He asked me for Rs. 50/- and went to the nearby shop. He returned with a cute green plastic tap and some tape. Replacing a tap is a matter of 5 minutes . But to show that he was inventing some new method of replacing it, he took about 20 to 30 minutes to finish the work.  Again I was getting late to go to the hospital.
At last we were ready and  my son went a little ahead of me to recharge my phone and  I was a little behind.  Suddenly, I spotted the Parur bus and started heading for it, because it was already at the bus-stop. My son was already at the bus-stop waiting for me to reach. There were quite some people to board the bus  and I  managed to reach near the door only to hear the 'kili' put a double bell and the bus moved forward without taking me in. Then an Ernakulam bus came and we got down at Cherai .From  Cherai we got a bus to Parur and yet another bus from Parur took us to Angamaly via. Manjali. Fortunately I had a good nap in the bus from Parur to Angamaly.
On my return journey my eyes were wide open to enjoy the bus ride. But the main thi ng I learned during this ride was to pray  because my life was in the hands of the driver, who was driving it like my son playing a computer car game. However,  I noticed that the people around me were quite cool.  They seemed to be confident about reaching home safely. But  I took out my rosary and started praying , as the bus was rocketing down the road. Thanks for the bus stops and the people waiting for the bus that forced the driver to put a brake and stop the bus.
At this point, I remember an incident, that happened in last . I was traveling from Palliport to Cherthala, to attend the mass on my father's 15th death anniversary. I was in a KSRTC bus that was heading to Thiruvananthapuram from Kodungallur. A young lady was seated beside me. She seemed to be very restless. She  was murmuring something. I inquired what the matter was. She said that the bus used to reach Ernakulam from Kodungallur within half-an-hour , but then it had reached only Njarackal. She was cursing the new driver who was not driving fast enough for her.
So, I think, the working class of people really enjoy their journey in a speeding bus for three reasons- one, they can reach office on time even if they start late.Secondly, they can be back home to see their little ones faces and their partner's smile as early as possible, engage in their daily chores and  hobbies at the earliest possible time. Thirdly, these buses ply at every nook and corner of our state and provide an affordable means of transportation for the common man. Only occasional passengers like me complain about over-speeding. So, I must be the odd man out.!!

SAMPLE QUESTIONS Std. X

2.  Gardiner says, "We can be neither complete anarchists nor complete socialists in this complex world."Do you agree? Give reasons.
In the passage 'On the Rule of the Road', A.G. Gardiner discusses the need of giving more importance to social liberty in our life . Individual liberty has to be curtailed to a great extend to enable all of us to enjoy social liberty.
Gardiner says, " We can be neither complete anarchists nor complete socialists in this complex world. I agree with his view. If we become complete anarchists and oppose the government and its rules the society cannot function at all. Every body will be getting in everybody else's way and nobody will get anywhere.
For example the stout lady in the passage walks through the middle of the road and creates chaos.  Similarly the man who talked in a loud and pompous voice in the train proved to be a complete anarchist. He became a nuisance for the passengers.
Complete socialists strictly obey the rules of the society and government. We may not be able to obey all the rules laid down by the government.  All the rules may not be acceptable and good for the society. We must have the freedom to question the government . In such situations we must use our individual liberty.
For example if the government makes changes in the school curriculum without considering the rights and feelings of all sections of the society and without proper professional advice, we must express our individual liberty to question the government and establish a school curriculum which is acceptable to all for the good of the students and the society.
Thus we cannot be complete socialists or complete anarchists. We have to be a judicious mixture of both.

ZENSTORIES

ZEN STORIES

Obedience
The master Bankei's talks were attended not only by Zen students but by persons of all ranks and sects. He never quoted sutras nor indulged in scholastic dissertations. Instead, his words were spoken directly from his heart to the hearts of his listeners.
His large audiences angered a priest of the Nichiren sect because the adherents had left to hear about Zen. The self-centered Nichiren priest came to the temple, determined to debate with Bankei.
"Hey, Zen teacher!" he called out. "Wait a minute. Whoever respects you will obey what you say, but a man like myself does not respect you. Can you make me obey you?"
"Come up beside me and I will show you," said Bankei.
Proudly the priest pushed his way through the crowd to the teacher.
Bankei smiled. "Come over to my left side."
The priest obeyed.
"No," said Bankei, "we may talk better if you are on the right side. Step over here."
The priest proudly stepped over to the right
"You see," observed Bankei, "you are obeying me and I think you are a very gentle person. Now sit down and listen."

APPRECIATION OF THE POEM"LINES WRITTEN IN MARCH"

Lines written in March is a poem written by William Wordsworth. The poem is about the happiness of the withdrawal of winter season. All things in nature are happy. The cock is crowing ,the stream is flowing, the cattle are grazing, the small clouds are sailing and the blue sky is prevailing. There are a lot of word-pictures in the poem which mark the arrival of spring season. In the line 'the plough boy  is whooping anon-anon'-the word anon is repeated to show the happiness of  of the plough boy.The poet has compared the retreating winter season to a defeated army.Winter represents the bad time of the year ,when there is illness, poverty etc.The crowing of the cock suggests the end of the winter season This is a beautiful poem which has rhyme and rhythm too.

DIARY ENTRY

Today I had a very sad experience. Early  morning a phone-call woke me up to say that a  friend of  of my husband had a heart attack last night and collapsed on the way to the hospital. It was a very bad news for us.We went for the funeral and it was a real-life experience of the poem "Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead".The dead man's wife never swooned nor uttered cry. The people around thought that she would die if she didn't weep.It was really a pity. Finally when the body of her husband was about to be buried -she burst into tears-she held her only daughter and wept bitterly-she lost all her control and fell on his body-It was a terrible scene-I just can't forget it.....
                                                          ''''''''''''''''''''
I went for the funeral in a line -bus{commonly known as red -killers in the town}.I travelled on the busy Vypin -Munambam route. This is a comparatively narrow road with about eight narrow bridges. The posh houses on either side of the road gives us an impression that the people here are well-off.However ,the coastal belt is not , all that well -off.There are narrow lanes leading to the east and west end of the island which is densely populated. But I don't know why they crowd on either side of the road and create problems for the vehicles passing by.All vehicles including cars, lorries.tempos carrying loads of fish, tourists buses and long -distance buses -are just speeding away. They are just least bothered about the lives of the people standing on either side of the road. These vehicles have already taken many of the innocent lives.I think it is high time that the islanders develop some kind of road sense and try to avoid standing on the roads and gossiping. The drivers too must have the sense that they are travelling along a narrow busy road and try to avoid over-speed. Both these precautionary measures can save a number of innocent lives!

John Keats

John Keats

John Keats (pronounced /ˈkiːts/; 31 October 1795 – 23 February 1821) was an English Romantic poet. Along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, he was one of the key figures in the second generation of the Romantic movement, despite the fact that his work had been in publication for only four years before his death.
During his life, his poems were not generally well received by critics; however, after his death, his reputation grew to the extent that by the end of the 19th century he had become one of the most beloved of all English poets. He has had a significant influence on a diverse range of later poets and writers: Jorge Luis Borges, for instance, stated that his first encounter with Keats was the most significant literary experience of his life.
The poetry of Keats is characterized by sensual imagery, most notably in the series of odes. Today his poems and letters are considered as among the most popular and analyzed in English literature.

Sonnet   A 14-line verse form usually having one of several conventional rhyme schemes.

Romantic Poetry

Romanticism largely began as a reaction against the prevailing Enlightenment ideals of the day. Inevitably, the characterization of a broad range of contemporaneous poets and poetry under the single unifying name can be viewed more as an exercise in historical compartmentalization than an attempt to capture the essence of the actual ‘movement’. Indeed, the term “Romanticism” did not arise until the Victorian period. Nonetheless, poets such as William Wordsworth were actively engaged in trying to create a new kind of poetry that emphasized intuition over reason and the pastoral over the urban, often eschewing modern forms and language in an effort to use ‘new’ language.

Daisy's song

The sun, with his great eye,
Sees not so much as I ;
And the moon, all silver, proud,
Might as well be in a cloud.

And the spring -- the spring !
I lead the life of a king !
Couch'd in the teeming grass,
I spy each pretty lass.

I look where no one dares,
And I stare where no one stares,
And when the night is nigh,
Lambs bleat my lullaby.

Daisies

Daisies are simple yet sophisticated and one of the most beautiful flowers in the floral world. Daisies convey cheer and exuberance in spades. Not surprisingly, daisies are popular both for gifting and growing in gardens.
white-daisy2-image
Daisies belong to the Daisy Family of Compositae, now known as Asteraceae in flowering plants. Daisies are native to north and central Europe.
The origin of the word Daisy is Anglo Saxon “daes eage” literally meaning “day’s eye”. It was called this because daisies open at dawn as the day is just beginning.
A Daisy symbolizes innocence and purity. It can also symbolize new beginnings. The flower meaning of daisy is “loyal love”, “I will never tell”.

Today I had been to Malipuram beach and aqua tourism zone
.
There are acres of fish farms and Kandal gardens(mangroove forests) It is a very beautiful place.

Kandal trees are very short. There were swings on some trees. To add to the beauty the tree trunks were painted.

There were painted bamboo bridges.

I t is a wonderful place. We can go boating too. Of course there was the mouth-watering Karimeen curry fresh as ever! wow!! Don't miss it

To the fish farm
You are so calm
with short trees and palm
A cave inside with
a roof of leaves
The bamboos painted
in red and green
for bridges that cross
small brooks
Boys and Girls went
canoeing around
enjoying nature so cool
I went near the pool
to see the fish
jump and fall
to be caught in nets
and served for all.
